The Deacons for Defense and referee was a black organization launch to protect civil rights workers against the Ku Klux Klan. Charles Sims was the founder of the Deacons for Defense and Justice. It was organized in Jonesboro, Louisiana, on July 10, 1964. Mr. Sims formed the base after local law of nature escorted a Klan march through a black similarity in Jonesboro, Louisiana. Based in local churches, the Deacons for Defense and Justice set up armed patrol car systems in cities such as Bogalusa and Jonesboro, Louisiana. They expanded to 62 chapters throughout the southwestern and a chapter in Chicago. The Deacons for Defense and Justice comprised a group of African American men who were mostly veterans of World fight II and the Korean War. Their goal was to combat Ku Klux Klan violence against sexual congress of Racial Equality (CORE) volunteers who were participating in voter modification activities. Disciplined and secretive, the Deacons generally limited their activities to patrolling black neighborhoods and protecting bunch meetings, CORE headquarters, and civil rights workers who were entering and leaving town. In addition, the Deacons come with marchers from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi, in the summer of 1966, during which the Student Nonviolent Coordinating commissioning (SNCC) leader Stokley Carmichael popularized the phrase Black Power.
