What Is Genetics

THE BACTERIAL GENOME

Hereditary information exists in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) Bacteria genome: chromosome + extra chromosomal DNA molecules ( plasmid DNAs, episomes) Single chromosome: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Mycobacterium sp. etcetera Two chromosomes: Burkholderia sp., Ralstonia sp., Vibrio cholerae.
Extra Chromosomal DNA
Plasmids: circular repeat stranded DNA molecule that replicates independently (autonomous replication). May take over one or more (non-essential) genes, smaller than the bacterial chromosome. normally expresses genes that allows the bacterium to adapt to a certain situation.
Most plasmids are classified by some recognizable functions that they serve in a bacterium, among them: a) F plasmid (fertility factors), b) R plasmids (Resistance) c) Virulence plasmids d) Bacteriocins e) Ti (Tumor-inducing) plasmids slew cause tumor in plants.
