Bentham and Mill argued that an action can be judged unplayful or bad by its Consequence (see Utilitarianism). Aquinas argued that on that point is a natural order to things which can be discerned through with(predicate) reason. This order is derived from the soul of design and purpose in gods creation. Kant introduced a new approach to Ethical Decision-making he argued that every human being has Immanuel Kant was a part of the European Enlightenment. He tried to develop a philosophy base on reason. He wanted to achieve a discount between reason and experience (he had read David Hume and the Empiricists). Kant argued that we experience the globe through our senses, hardly with our reason. We do not know things directly, but only as they appear to us.
Duty: a sense of clean obligation, experienced as a belief that on that point is something that we ought to do.
Kant wrote:
Two things fill the mind with ever new and increase admiration and awe the
oftener and more steadily we forge on them: the starry heavens above me and
the moral rectitude within me.
Critique of Practical Reason
He began with the fact that he felt a moral obligation to act in a certain way, and tried to find some categorization of explanation for it. He also argued that ethical statements are a priori synthetic.
A priori means knowledge that comes sooner sense experience.
N.B. Utilitarians take that ethical knowledge comes from the consequence of an action. It must therefore be a posteriori after experience. Synthetic means knowledge that requires immaterial verification, and may be true or false. Therefore A Priori Synthetic means that a statement is knowable before sense experience, but requires sense experience for verification.
A moral statement is a priori synthetic because ethical knowledge comes
from fresh reason (rather than sense experience) but may also be either right
or wrong.
