In both books deceit was a swelled part of the falsehood. In The Scarlet Letter, the main characters Hester, Chilliingworth and Dimmesdale were tangled in a web of deceit because of a deadly sin, adultery. The author describes deceit using these characters, and each of them has a assorted response to deceit, making the reader realize the way a mortal reacts to a feeling differs between characters. In Speak, the main feeling of deceit comes from Melinda because of how the party during the summer played out. She not except feels deceit herself but she knows others feel it for her.
Another big section in both books is despair in the main characters of the invoice. The feeling of despair is more prominent in Speak because the book focuses more on one character the entire story and not three like in The Scarlet Letter.
Melindas feelings of despair really shape her character and how she sees herself, until the end of the story where she really gets rid of her despair and becomes almost a different person. In The Scarlet Letter, the character feeling the most despair is Dimmesdale. Towards the middle of the book when his health starts failing you can see his despair show more and more in his thoughts and in his sermons. Both of these characters feel despair because of the guilt from something that they or happened to them. The difference is while Dimmesdale let his guilt and despair eat him alive, Melinda uses hers to vest herself and become a stronger person.
