Jack becomes the leader of the hunters but longs for total power and becomes increasingly wild, barbaric, and cruel as the novel progresses. Jack, adept at manipulating the other boys, represents the instinct of savagery within human beings, as opposed to the civilizing instinct Ralph represents.
Jack very much represents ambition from the novels onset it is neat that he wants to be the leader and is provoke when he loses out to Ralph although the election is supposed to be the terminal say Jacks ambition drives him not only to create a rival group on the island but also to search to pulverize or convert the remaining boys and the original logical tribe in hopes of becoming supreme.
Also it is very clear his ambition never dies, his group kills Piggy and Simon and by the prison term Ralph is rescued by the Naval Ship they have in effect destroyed the island with the raging fire, he was so blindsided by his ambition that (if the naval ship had not come) the boys would have destroyed the quality which contained their only source of food (they were on an island) only to destroy Ralph the only remaining member of the original tribe which would confine him ultimate power.
