SUMMARY
A Dolls House by Henrik Ibsen traces the awakening of Nora Helmer from her previously unexamined life of domestic, wifely comfort. Having been ruled her whole life by either her father or her husband Torvald, Nora finally comes to query the foundation of everything she has believed in once her marriage is put to the test. Borrowed gold from a man named Krogstad by forging her fathers signature, she was able to pay for a trip to save her cronk husband. Since then, she has had to contrive ways to pay back her loan, growing particularly concerned with money and the ways of a complex world.
SETTING
The monkey is heavily influenced by its Victorian time period. This era was specially relentless in many respects. Talk of sex and notwithstanding babies was distasteful. Gender roles were pretty darn confining. Women were expected to be humble to their husbands; husbands were expected to dominate. Women raised the barbarianren; men brought home the bacon. So it went. Anyone who challenged these late entrenched values faced some serious consequences. This charged atmosphere of gender division was the reason that the exploit became such a phenomenon. Theres a good chance that, without the controversy, wed have never even heard of A Dolls House.
Needless to say, the pressure of strict Victorian values is the spark that ignites the plays central conflicts.
CHARACTER
Nora,the protagonist of the play and the wife of Torvald Helmer. Nora initially seems like a playful, naïve child who lacks knowledge of the world outside her home. She does have some mercenary experience, however, and the small acts of rebellion in which she engages indicate that she is not as innocent or happy as she appears. She comes to see her station in her marriage with increasing clarity and finds the strength to acquit herself from her oppressive situation.
