Katherina?s obvious mistreatment is further heightened when Petruchio says ?when you are gentle you shall have one?, using the pun of the word gentlewoman, forcing Katherina to either set to the accepted roles of women in society or not be entitled to receiving gifts. This clearly indicates the disadvantage which Katherina had suffered as a closure of her not complying to expected social roles of women.
